Mr van der Zyden convicted of 8 counts of indecency and 7 counts of sexual intercourse with underage persons while outside Australia. The offences related to several complainants and were committed during Mr van der Zyden’s tour of duty with the Australian Navy in Kiribati.

Mr van der Zyden sentenced to 3.5 years' imprisonment, with a minimum non-parole period of 1.75 years, for each count of sexual intercourse, concurrent 1-year terms on two counts of indecency, and concurrent 1.5-year terms for the remaining indecency convictions: Mullins J.
